DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) is designed to help people who struggle with managing their emotions and maintaining positive relationships. It is broken up into four sections that help build skills to improve MINDFULNESS (being aware of the present moment without judgment) , EMOTIONAL REGULATION (understanding and reducing vulnerability to and changing undesirable emotions), DISTRESS TOLERANCE (getting through crisis and accepting the moment as it is), and INTERPERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS (getting interpersonal goals met, maintaining relationships, and building self respect).
Traditional DBT skills groups can last 6 months or more, while this short-term, 8 week group will focus on teaching and practicing the core skills in each area, with a focus on how to practically apply them in your life. This will be done via psycho-education, role plays, discussion and smaller group practice. This group is NOT intended as an alternative to longer term individual therapy, but can be great supplement to current treatment and/or an introduction to DBT.
